BurnBadger

The easy way to use your Artilume T1

BurnBadger was built and tested on the Artilume T1 (3, 7 and 12 W). Connect over USB or the T1’s Wi-Fi, pick your material, frame it and burn. Free to download; Pro is $59 once.

Watch: from connecting to your first burn

Your first burn on the T1, in five steps

  1. Connect. Plug in the T1’s USB cable, or join the T1’s Wi-Fi. BurnBadger finds it and checks its settings.
  2. Focus. Set the 2 mm gap with the focus block (or a US nickel).
  3. Pick your material. Tested power and speed fill in for your module.
  4. Add a design. Text, art, a photo, or a starter project, then Fit to material for your coaster or patch size.
  5. Frame, then Burn. The frame shows exactly where it lands. Over Wi-Fi the job runs from the T1’s SD card.

New material? Burn a test grid first

A small grid of squares, each at a different power and speed, shows what your material does before you ruin a good piece.

Reading your grid: which square goes where

  • Engrave layer (text, shapes, solid areas): on wood, leather or cork, the darkest square that’s still clean, with no charring and not burned through. On slate and other materials that mark light, the palest clean square before it turns gold.
  • Photo layer: one or two squares lighter than that, so photos keep their shading.
  • Score / Cut layer: run the grid again as Cut / score (line). For scoring, pick the fastest crisp line; for cutting, the fastest square that drops right out.
  • Then click Save as my preset under Material (Pro, Mac and Windows), and next time it’s one click.

Next: burn two things at two settings with layers

Each layer is a set of burn settings. Add a layer, select a photo and set its Layer, and two photos burn two different ways in one job.

Settings that work

Tested on a real T1: slate, kraft gift bags, cork coasters, leatherette patches, anodized cards, denim, balsa and wood.

Wi-Fi that doesn’t drop your burn

Jobs upload to the T1’s SD card and run there, so your phone can sleep.

Test before you waste material

The BurnBadger test card and the power × speed grid show what a new material does.

Questions

What software works with the Artilume T1?

BurnBadger was built and tested on the Artilume T1. It runs on Windows and Mac (iPhone, iPad and Android apps coming very soon). It’s free to download; Pro is $59 once.

Can I use the Artilume T1 over Wi-Fi?

Yes. BurnBadger connects to the T1’s own Wi-Fi and uploads each job to the T1’s SD card, so the burn finishes even if your phone or computer loses Wi-Fi.

What focus does the Artilume T1 use?

A 2 mm gap between the laser module and the material. BurnBadger’s focus guide walks you through it (a US nickel works if you lost the block).

What power and speed should I use on the T1?

Pick your material in BurnBadger and it fills in tested settings for your module (3, 7 or 12 W): slate, kraft paper, cork, leatherette, anodized aluminum, denim, balsa and wood. Burn the test card or a power × speed grid to fine-tune.

Is BurnBadger made by Artilume?

No. BurnBadger is independent software made by Ranger Tales LLC, tested on our own T1.

Artilume is a trademark of its owner. BurnBadger is independent and isn’t affiliated with Artilume. Also see BurnBadger vs LightBurn and other lasers BurnBadger works with.
